The short answer
Keep Voice Memos if you are happy recording and retrieving your notes there. Consider REC if you want its focused searchable library, a free transcription allowance and optional lifetime Pro with App Lock and folder backup. Neither choice is automatically right for everyone.
Do both offer transcription?
Yes, subject to availability. Apple documents transcription and library search across recording titles and transcripts on supported devices and languages. Transcript search is not exclusive to REC. REC also depends on supported speech recognition; a recording must be transcribed before its spoken words can be found. Check Apple's current transcription documentation.
The useful question is not simply “does it transcribe?” It is whether you can find the right recording later. In REC, View All searches completed saved transcripts alongside recording names and optional places. Try a short, distinctive word first, especially when speech recognition may have misheard a long phrase.
What can I try in REC without paying?
You can keep up to 10 recordings at a time, play, rename and share them, protect them against accidental deletion, and use two successful manual transcriptions per rolling seven days. Failed attempts do not consume the allowance. Saved transcripts remain searchable and shareable when no allowance remains.

What does the one-time upgrade change?
REC Pro removes the saved-recording count and weekly transcription limits, adds automatic transcription, optional recording places, secure recording unlock, App Lock and Files backup. It is an optional lifetime in-app purchase, not a subscription. Storage, speech recognition availability and accuracy still impose practical limits.
What does App Lock actually protect?
REC Pro App Lock requires device-owner authentication when the app starts or returns from the background. It uses Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode. This is different from the free recording lock, which protects against accidental deletion, not playback or sharing. Exported and backed-up copies are outside App Lock.
We are not claiming that REC is the only way to protect an iPhone app or that an app lock makes audio an independently encrypted vault. Consider the phone's own security settings as well as the recording app.
Backup is not the same as sync
REC Pro copies recordings to a folder you choose in Files. A supported cloud provider may synchronize that folder, but REC does not promise a shared, two-way library across devices. A local folder on the same phone is not protection against losing the phone. Set up and verify a second copy.
Where REC is not a replacement
Do not switch expecting automatic meeting attendance, collaborative meeting summaries, a full audio editor or automatic migration of an existing Voice Memos library. This comparison does not claim those features. Keep your original recordings and test exports before changing an established workflow.
Our recommendation
Give REC a small real task: record a 30-second idea, transcribe it, then find it by a word tomorrow. If that feels more natural, the app may earn a place on your phone. If Voice Memos already does the job, there is no need to replace it.
